Will Boyd

Born: February 13, 1974

Multi-reed instrumentalist, composer, educator Will Boyd hails from soul sax tradition like artists Eddie Harris, Hank Crawford, David "Fat Head" Newman, King Curtis and Yusef Lateef. Originally from Orangeburg SC by way of Queens NY, Will currently resides in Knoxville TN. He is a member of the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra and currently has 2 solo albums “Live at the Red Piano Lounge” and “Freedom Soul Jazz”. Will also co-leads a group with Wife, jazz radio host, and founder of the Knoxville Women in Jazz Jam Festival Kelle Jolly.

David Bertrand

David grew up in the Trinidadian neighborhood of Cocorite, four lanes of highway from the sea. Growing up, he played a wide range of classical and folk music before a chance BBC jazz broadcast at midnight through his grandmother’s GE radio forever changed his relationship with music. Encouraged by the artistry of Joe Farrell and Kent Jordan, he was determined to join the fraternity of musicians who have championed the flute as a credible jazz instrument.

His own voice has been deeply influenced by the world of jazz tenor saxophone, the instrument he’d always felt connected to which was simply not available in his band program at the time. Initially drawn to the iconic figures of John Coltrane and Joe Henderson, his ear also turned to the voices of players active in his lifetime: in the days of dial-up internet, a young David would patiently wait upwards of a hour just so he could hear the likes of Mark Turner, Chris Bacas and John Ellis for the first time. 

Efrayim Fischbacher

Born: April 13, 1929

The World's Loudest Clarinet Player™

Known for his stage-craft, volume, witty reparteé and musical skills, the world has only known one Efrayim Fischbacher, also known to his worldwide fans as "Effie".  

This nonegenarian has had a career that started in the early 1940's in Hoboken and New York, continued with a stint in the Army bands in Korea, culminating with the award of "World's Loudest Clarinetist™ in 1967.  He spent time during the heydey of Las Vegas showbands, and achieved notoriety in Asia after his legendary Lost Winter in Macau, as reported in "Hey! Go!" magazine.  Just name a legendary figure, and Effie will surely have had an experience and a tale to tell.  

Steven Kamperman

Composer, clarinet player, and drummer Steven Kamperman has a taste for musical adventure that has brought him into many different musical surroundings. Although extremely versatile, Kamperman’s work always displays a distinct personality, guaranteeing a subtle balance between surprise and heartfelt inspiration. Famous Dutch composer Theo Loevendie stated: “Steven Kamperman has the rare ability to make every style of music sound like his own.” Improvised music After an initial start as a jazz improviser, a special love for modal folk music led him in 2002 to a decade- lasting and successful collaboration with Turkish vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Behsat Üvez, in their mutual project Baraná (Baraná & Co, Baraná Trio, Elektro Shaman, Şarap / Wine, Xenopolis with Ceylan Ertem)

Winko Ljizz

Born: 1955

Something has been missing from the northeast corner of 22nd and J streets for the past couple months. Those familiar with the weekend scene in this area have noticed the absence of a large, purple truck bearing the words, “Acoustic Sanctuary.”

Many people have become acquainted with this entertainment venue on wheels from the inside, while others maintain certain levels of curiosity from afar.

Accompanied with the green, lighted words, “OneManBand” and “Storyteller,” and stairs leading up to its purple curtain-covered entrance, this unique roadside attraction has been hard to miss. It had been a fixture of this midtown street corner on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays evenings since 2002.

Klaus Lessmann

Born: April 20, 1961

Klaus Lessmann (Clarinetist, Saxophonist, Composer, Arranger, Conductor) Originally from Burghausen (Germany), he studied classical music and jazz at the Musikhochschule Graz (Austria) and has lived since 1986 near Siena in Italy. He teaches jazz (clarinet, saxophone, combo, big band, arrangement) at the school of the Siena Jazz association and in other schools and workshops, and is regional coordinator for Italy of the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ). He also teaches music to kids in regular schools. He performs with all sorts of groups, from dixieland and gypsy jazz to contemporary stuff

Ofer Shapiro

Ofer Shapiro is a Tel-Aviv based Saxophone/multi-wind performer and Jazz composer/arranger.

His delicate, melodious playing style has been described as 'sweetly subversive, music that woos and insinuates' by the New-York based jazz critic Michael Steinman.

Ofer has played lead alto with many bands and large groups including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. the Eli Degibri big band, the Eyal Vilner big band and many others. He has played with many Tel-Aviv based small groups such as the Mamelo Gaitanopolous Sextet, the Danny Rosenfeld Octet and his own jazz quartet.

Andrew Woolf

Born: January 9, 1982

Andrew Woolf is a saxophone and clarinet player known for his versatility across a diverse range of styles, his sensitive musicianship, and his distinctive and expressive instrumental voice. Admired for his melodic and restrained approach as a jazz player, he is also now recognised as a leading exponent of choro in the UK, alongside his performances in a variety of settings, crossing between modern jazz (London Vocal Project, The Button Band), Brazilian music (Alvorada, Choro Matiz), experimental improvisation (Madwort Saxophone Quartet), burning Afrobeat (Afrik Bawantu) and more. This breadth of experience and interest finds a unified voice in his output as a band leader and composer

Muffy Styler

Born: May 1, 1973

Jenny Lee Mitchell aka Muffy Styler began singing as a teenager and first concentrated on classical opera technique studying first in her hometown of New York City and then in Germany where she studied with a soloist at the State Opera of Bavaria. After 5 years of private study Jenny lived in Germany, Austria and Switzerland while performing in operetta and musical theater all across Europe for another 15 years, during which time she made the transition to singing jazz which started early on but really began to take shape once she moved back to the States and began playing clarinet as well. Her early influences were Sarah Vaughan and Anita O'Day

Aaron Johnson

Born: June 9, 1991

Aaron Johnson is a Saxophonist, Clarinetist and Flutist based in New York City where he leads his quartet and freelances as a jazz musician and commercial woodwind doubler. In addition to leading his own group in nearly every New York jazz establishment, from Smalls to Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has worked with notable jazz musicians such as Jon Batiste, Dick Hyman, Chuck Israels, Ken Peplowski, Connie Crothers, Slide Hampton, John Colianni, Ed Palermo, Pete Barbutti, Joey "G Clef" Cavaseno, Jon-Erik Kellso, Dwayne Clemons, Sacha Perry, Veronica Swift, Benny Benack III, and many more
