2020 and Me

Read "2020 and Me" reviewed by Skip Heller

As I type this, it is December 8, 2020, the fortieth anniversary of John Lennon's murder. I was then a newly-minted barband guitarist, fifteen years old and thinking how the world —via the election of Ronald Reagan —and music had just suffered the worst season that could ever be. 2020 has been an ongoing ...

Out of the Roma Villages of Turkey, Clarinet Reigns Beyond Its Traditions

Read "Out of the Roma Villages of Turkey, Clarinet Reigns Beyond Its Traditions" reviewed by Arthur R George

The clarinet, foundational for jazz from Sidney Bechet unto Eric Dolphy, remains in strong use in the indigenous Roma music of the eastern Mediterranean. Elsewhere in the world clarinet generally has been moved aside by saxophone's bigger sound. But in the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey, clarinet provides jazz shadings to traditional music, speaks a range of ...

While pundits and experts debate whether the United States of America has entered an age of decline as a world power, New York saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and inveterate troublemaker Ed Palermo makes an incontrovertible case for un-American ascendance. With The Great Un-American Songbook Volume 3: Run for your Life, slated for release on guitarist/vocalist Bruce ...

Although Sting is mostly known for his solo career and, before that, for fronting one of the most epic band of all times, The Police, his love for jazz has been a common thread throughout his career. His jazz sensibility became more prominent when he started his solo career with the album The Dream of the ...

None of these men requires introducing to anyone who has even remotely followed the contemporary jazz scene at any point over the past thirty years. Modern Big Bands: Christian McBride, Marshal Gilkes, Gerald Wilson, Brian Lynch and More

Read "Modern Big Bands: Christian McBride, Marshal Gilkes, Gerald Wilson, Brian Lynch and More" reviewed by Russell Perry

Since the early days of jazz, composers, arrangers, and players have sought out large ensembles for their potential for rich expression and vibrant musical color. Even in the heyday of small-group dominated bebop, Dizzy Gillespie formed a big band as soon as he could. To this day, while few bands can hold together as touring units, ...

Benny Benack III: A Lot of Livin' to Do

Read "A Lot of Livin' to Do" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi
