Pat Metheny Unity Group: Kin (<-->)
by Doug Collette
Pat Metheny's Unity Group is perfectly named because, in its quintet lineup even more so than the original quartet, the group's approach brings together every musical element the famed guitarist has pursued during the course of his career. Acoustic guitars of the solo projects, dense high-tech arrangements à la Pat Metheny Group, traditional jazz horns recalling ...
Stein Urheim: Stein Urheim
by Eyal Hareuveni
Norwegian, Bergen-based guitarist Stein Urheim, known for his duo with vocalist Mari Kvien Brunvoll and his own drone band The Last Hurrah, released an impressive, limited edition album two years ago, Kosmolodi (Hubro Music, 2012), where he began to explore his breadth of musical vocabulary on guitars and other acoustic stringed instruments. Urheim melts organically exotic ...
Zlatko Kaucic Trio: December Soul
by Vincenzo Roggero
"December Soul," l'inizio.
Gary Smulyan, Dominic Chianese: Bella Napoli
by Alberto Bazzurro
David White Jazz Orchestra: The Chase
by Dan Bilawsky
The Chase is one heck of a wild ride. Trombonist David White has followed up his Jazz Orchestra's debut--Flashpoint (Mister Shepherd Records, 2011)--with an album that's short on material but rich in content. A scant thirty-four minutes of music can be found on this one, with all but one of the six tracks falling in the ...
Roddy Ellias Trio: Monday's Dream
by John Kelman
Since returning home to Ottawa after spending much of his adult life as an associate music professor at Concordia University in Montréal, Roddy Ellias may have retired but he's far from slowing down. Retirement's just a word, but for this extraordinary guitarist it's clearly been a liberating one; based on Monday's Dream, his first recording since ...
Danny Fox Trio: Wide Eyed
by Dan Bilawsky
"This record is the result of countless hours of writing, rehearsing in a basement, touring around the country in a clown car, drinking too much coffee, beating jokes into the ground, listening to all kinds of music together, and pushing each other to try new things (be it musically or using cruise control on the highway)." ...
Hans Tammen / Denman Maroney: Arson
by Eyal Hareuveni
Hyper-pianist Denman Maroney, known for his ongoing collaborations featuring double bass master Mark Dresser with the experimental sound artist and conceptual explorer of the so- called “endangered guitar" Hans Tammen, have been working together since 1998 as a duo and in other formations. Unfortunately, until now the innovative work of this unique duo was documented only ...
Dave Douglas: Riverside
by Giuseppe Segala
3 Cohens: Tightrope
by Angelo Leonardi
