Bruce Hornsby

"When I play music, I guess I'm what you'd call an ecstatic," says Bruce Hornsby. "I'm always pursuing those joyful, exuberant, transcendent moments that happen when everything is working. That's why I called this album Levitate, because that's what those moments feel like." By any standard, Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse and adventurous careers in contemporary music. Drawing from a vast wellspring of American musical traditions, the singer/pianist/composer/bandleader has created a large and remarkably accomplished body of work that's employed a vast array of stylistic approaches, while maintaining the integrity, virtuosity and artistic curiosity that have been hallmarks of his work from the start. The 13-time Grammy nominee's multifarious talents and far-ranging musical interests are prominent on Levitate, which marks the artist's Verve debut

Bruce Hornsby and yMusic The Merriam Theater jny: Philadelphia, PAMarch 4, 2020 “It's, what, our fourth show? We should have it together by now," Bruce Hornsby laughed during one between-song lull while a couple of his cohorts quickly tuned up. The joke was that he'd forgotten the planned order of songs ...

Jimmy Haslip: Amperes Beyond The BASSics, Part 1

Read "Jimmy Haslip: Amperes Beyond The BASSics, Part 1" reviewed by Jim Worsley

The name Jimmy Haslip needs no introduction. So, he doesn't get one. Seriously, we had a lot of ground to cover and he had so many great stories and interesting asides to share that we are breaking the interview into two parts as it is. So, without further ado... All About Jazz: I ...

Grateful Dead: Saint of Circumstance: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ, 6/17/91 (3CD)

Read "Saint of Circumstance: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ, 6/17/91 (3CD)" reviewed by Doug Collette

Hearing Grateful Dead's Saint of Circumstance is a significantly different experience than seeing it. Both the audio and video recordings of Giants Stadium June 17, 1991 are part of a larger box set, appropriately subtitled Shall We Go, You and I, While We Can? (Rhino, 2019). But the film, featured as last year's annual 'Meetup at ...

John Kelman's Best Releases of 2019

Read "John Kelman's Best Releases of 2019" reviewed by John Kelman

Well, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome continues to be a challenge, as it has been since mid-2014. 2019 represents, in fact, the worst year when it comes to the actual number of articles written. Still, I've been finding an increasingly satisfying niche in the arena of in-depth, detailed and extensive/exhaustive (exhausting, for you as much as I!!) articles. ...

Geno Thackara's Best Releases of 2019

Read "Geno Thackara's Best Releases of 2019" reviewed by Geno Thackara

Another year, another wealth of goodies, and as usual it seems unfair to narrow down so many fine offerings to only a dozen favorites. Also as usual, there were a couple late discoveries that would have deserved to be included here last year if I'd known about them at the time. Belated credit goes to the ...

Mike Stern - Jeff Lorber Fusion: Eleven

Read "Eleven" reviewed by Jim Worsley

Eleven is a record co-led by fusion giants Mike Stern and Jeff Lorber. It features ten songs (Stern laughingly stated that he never was very good at math) which are a mix of originals and reworked vintage. Stern was also quoted as saying that he and Lorber are from “different orbits." One thing they do have ...

Mike Stern: Different Orbits

Read "Mike Stern: Different Orbits" reviewed by Jim Worsley

Having arrived in jny: London from jny: New York City to play two nights at legendary Ronnie Scott's with Dave Weckl, Tom Kennedy, and Randy Brecker, Mike Stern was understandably jet lagged. All About Jazz needs your support

Donate
All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
