Born:

Al Payne is a bassist, composer and music educator born in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of 21 he moved to Los Angeles, CA where he began his musical journey learning acoustic guitar and soon after switched to the electric bass. 

He took his first bass lessons with Ronald McQueen the legendary bassist from the reggae band Steel Pulse. From there he explored a wide range of styles - roots, ska, reggae, afrobeat and gospel - gaining versatility and shaping a unique sound influenced by world music traditions.

In 2016 he received a scholarship to study Music at Middlesex University London where he immersed himself in the vibrant London jazz scene, performing with various ensembles and experimenting with new approaches to composition and arranging. Upon returning to the United States he joined the Jazz Program at City College of New York where he studied with Lincoln Goines and earned his B.A. in Music.
