Al Payne

Al Payne was born in Brooklyn, NY and at the age of 21 he moved to Los Angeles, CA. His musical journey began shortly after when he started learning acoustic guitar. He then switched to bass where he took his first lessons with Ronald McQueen from the reggae band, Steel Pulse.

While developing his sound, he began performing with various world music groups, playing a wide range of styles from roots, ska, reggae, afrobeat to gospel. These experiences influenced him and allowed him to grow with versatility.

In 2016 he received a scholarship to study Music abroad at Middlesex University London. This opportunity exposed him to the London Jazz scene, where he was able to play with different ensembles and explore a variety of approaches to composing and arranging.

Upon returning to the U.S. he joined the jazz program at the City College N.Y. where he studied with Lincoln Goines and received his B.A. in Music.

His new single, Let's Meet Between 5&4 is now available on all streaming platforms!

By the time drummer Sonny Payne joined Count Basie in December 1954, he had played with bands led by Paul Bascomb, Hot Lips Page, Earl Bostic, Tiny Grimes and Erskine Hawkins. He left Basie in December 1964 to lead a trio and tour with Illinois Jacquet ...

The first disk captures the two playing a set at NY's The Stone, 2009, probably the premier venue these days for what's important in new jazz and free improvisation. The second disk, Conversations, covers another session of the two playing in Connie's loft in Brooklyn. It is a chance to hear the two interacting with an ...

Cecil Payne Dies at 84

Source: All About Jazz

Cecil Payne: Dec. 14, 1922 - Nov. 27, 2007 Born in Brooklyn on December 14, 1922, Cecil Payne proved one of the bebop eras strongest baritone saxophonists; nonetheless, he has always worked in undeserved obscurity. After leaving the military service in 1946, Payne cast aside the guitar, alto, and clarinet to pick up the bari for a brief stint with Roy Eldridges Big Band.
