Stonephace: Stonephace

Quella del sassofonista e flautista Larry Stabbins è una delle figure più originali e eclettiche della musica inglese: nel suo quasi quarantennale curriculum troviamo il sodalizio con Keith Tippett e l'acid-jazz ante litteram dei Working Week, la London Composers Orchestra e il tributo "Soupsongs" a Wyatt, per giungere ora al progetto Stonephace, ideato con il produttore e dj Krzysztof Oktalski e impreziosito dalla presenza di due Portishead come Adrian Utley alla chitarra e Jim Barr al basso, nonché da ospiti come il trombettista Guy Barker e il batterista Mark Sanders.

L'idea non è certo nuova e si muove dalle coordinate classiche dell'abbinata jazz + elettronica, esplorando con grande ecletticità i terreni più ampi, dal groovin' rock al free estatico alla Pharoah Sanders [l'incipit di "Wedghead Gets Lucky" ne è un esempio evidente], dalla coolness estiva alla weirdness terzomondista, il tutto spolverato da una patina psichedelica.

Ne esce un disco divertente e ben fatto, forse leggermente compiaciuto nel suo multistilismo, ma che potrebbe con facilità ammorbidire il cuore degli ascoltatori non più giovincelli e che hanno abbastanza "ore di volo" sonoro alle spalle per gustarsi gli spazi cinematici ["White Queen Psychology"] e le aperture acide senza perdere la concentrazione.

Tra i pezzi più riusciti troviamo cose come "Five Miles High" o "Level and Degrees of Light" [che condivide con "Yellow Brock Road" la bizzarra sorte di portare il titolo di un disco altrui, rispettivamente di Muhal Richard Abrams e Elton John!!], avvolgenti e suadenti. Complessivamente un po' nostalgico!
