Lucerne Jazz Orchestra: Still Now

Questa bella orchestra svizzera non sfugge alle influenze ormai dominanti nel mondo delle larghe formazioni jazzistiche contemporanee. I riferimenti sono a Gil Evans filtrati dalla sensibilità tutta femminile di Maria Schneider (che a sua volta è stata debitamente influenzata anche da Bob Brookmeyer). Non manca una spruzzatina di musica mitteleuropea, certamente portata dal direttore tedesco David Grottschreiber. Quest'ultimo firma quattro delle otto composizioni proposte in questo Still Now, mentre le altre quattro composizioni sono equamente divise fra la cantante Karin Meier e il trombettista Aurel Nowak.

La scrittura è elegante e formalmente ineccepibile, l'orchestra mette in campo la giusta personalità e gli ensemble sono belli pieni e corposi. Gli assoli si intrecciano con raffinatezza, senza mai comunque raggiungere picchi fuori quota. La sezione ritmica è sempre ben presente e sa sottolineare con il giusto incedere anche i passaggi più delicati. Forse il momento meno scontato è l'assolo aggressivo di Dave Gisler alla chitarra nel brano "The Zone". Il suo approccio ricorda Vernon Reid, Sonny Sharrock e per certi versi anche Jean Paul Bourelly e Terry Kath. Il suo modo di procedere coraggioso regala una dimensione più libera a tutta l'orchestra.
