Mazzarino - Fioravanti - Bagnoli: Songs

La formula del piano trio non è frequente nella discografia di Giovanni Mazzarino. In venticinque anni di incisioni da leader questo è appena il terzo album: dall'ultimo lavoro Nostalgia, inciso con Steve Swallow e Adam Nussbaum, lo separano dodici anni e dal primo, I Remember Miles (con Nello Toscano e Paolo Mappa) addirittura sedici.
L'album in questione è stato inciso nel marzo 2013 ed è già uscito come allegato al numero di maggio/giugno 2014 della rivista Jazzit. Questa riedizione è quanto mai opportuna perchè amplia la diffusione di un lavoro intenso e ricercato. A parte il lavoro di editing -una confezione più elegante e sofisticata-non ci sono variazioni in ambito musicale.

Presentare un piano trio con un repertorio di ballad non è cosa da poco perchè induce al confronto con formazioni magistrali come quelle guidate da Keith Jarrett e Brad Mehldau, per non parlare di Bill Evans. Pianista di profonda sensibilità, Mazzarino ha trovato in Riccardo Fioravanti e Stefano Bagnoli i partner ideali per offrire una prova d'alto livello, evidenziando autorevolezza e profondità d'eloquio. Un disegno melodico sofisticato, attento all'equilibrio sonoro e alle trasparenze, s'interseca con fantasiose soluzioni ritmiche, evidenziando raffinatezza, versatilità ed accentuato respiro interno.
Il brano iniziale "Wrong Together" di Steve Swallow è uno degli esempi migliori: dopo un nervoso confronto improvvisato d'apertura, il pianoforte delinea il tema con sobrietà mentre la rimica si mantiene serrata per tutto l'assolo di Mazzarino, in un esemplare interplay. Col successivo intervento di Fioravanti la tensione si distende fino al tema finale.
Tensioni e distensioni si alternano in tutto il percorso musicale, con ispirazione e freschezza narrativa. Considerazione finale ma non secondaria è la splendida registrazione sonora, effettuata dal grande Stefano Amerio.
