Sathima Bea Benjamin: Song Spirit
La coppia si è spesso esibita insieme, ma come si può vedere dai bei nomi che l'affiancano in questa antologia di brani tratti dai numerosi album che ha registrato, il loro sodalizio musicale, a differenza di quello di vita, non è durato molto. C'è il grande Duke Ellington in una session registrata a Parigi, persa e poi ritrovata e pubblicata molto tempo dopo, in una curiosa esecuzione di "I Got It Bad and That Ain't No Good" in cui i due sono accompagnati, oltre che dalla ritmica, dal pizzicato del violino di Svend Asmussen che esegue la melodia in sottofondo. E poi l`esecuzione dei due originals "Africa" e "Children of Soweto".
Sono molti i grossi nomi presenti che accompagnano una cantante dalla bella voce vellutata, a suo agio sugli standards e sui brani di origine africana, tra cui il contrabbassista Buster Williams con il suo suono possente, Kenny Barron, Billy Higgins...
Quest'album offre una panoramica abbastanza precisa di quello che Sathima Bea Benjamin ha inciso nel corso degli anni e le note di copertina con una lunga intervista danno i retroscena di una lunga carriera cominciata nel regime dell'apartheid e poi continuata in esilio, gli anni a New York, la nostalgia e la voglia di cantare, oltre agli standards, i ritmi ed i colori del suo continente. Sono parole che danno un quadro su quello che è stato il suo passato.
