Chris Connor: Sings Gentle Bossa Nova

La Justin Time, emerita casa discografica canadese, ha tirato fuori dagli archivi un album della cantante Chris Connor, pubblicato nel 1965 dalla ABC-Paramount e prodotto allora da Ken Greenglass. Lei, bionda platinata e dalla voce irresistibilmente "cool," era uscita nel 1962 dalla scuderia Atlantic e dopo due album con la FM, codiretta dal suo manager Monte Kay, dopo il fallimento finanziario di quest´ultima aveva trovato spazio continuando a cantare magnificamente gli standard.

Erano gli anni della bossa nova, ritmo che veniva dal Brasile. Allora una novità, oggi parte del mainstream. E quest´album, ottimamente rimasterizzato da Rudy Van Gelder, non meritava certo di finire nel dimeticatoio.

Buona parte della riuscita dell'album va riconosciuta agli arrangiamenti dell' arrangiatore Pat William, abile a creare situazioni inaspettate e divertenti. Come ad esempio nella cover del classico dei Beatles "A Hard Day's Night," con un'introduzione di flauto e clavicembalo che sembra uscita dal tema di apertura di Vic Mizzy per la serie TV The Addams Family che andava in onda proprio in quel periodo (1964-1966). Geniale!

Il resto del breve album ci fa ascoltare ritmi di bossa nova e standards da parte di una cantante che merita di essere conosciuta dalle nuove generazioni per l´eleganza della voce ed il senso del ritmo insieme alla capacità di creare con le sue interpretazioni delle atmosfere molto raffinate.
