Signal Problems: Signal Problems

Il trombettista Danny Gouker, dopo anni di attività a capo del quartetto Signal Problems, ha deciso di lasciarne traccia discografica. In questa sua prima fatica come leader firma tutti i brani, che si basano su un'idea semplice ma efficace, forse non estremamente originale, ma condotta con personalità e polso sicuro: quella di partire da moduli ritmici e melodici ben cadenzati e ripetuti, sorta di riff che diventano cellule generatrici di strutture, sviluppi, ambiti emotivi, suggestioni...
Da questo incedere ossessivo le cose gradualmente si complicano con piccole variazioni metriche, accensioni coloristiche, soprattutto con l'intreccio fra le voci del sax e della tromba man mano che si ampliano gli spazi per l'improvvisazione. Si tratta di un espediente ripetitivo, ma giocato con arguzia e intelligenza, toccando le corde dell'austerità o della gioia ludica, del mistero o della paranoia.

Grande merito del risultato va dato alla pulsazione perentoria e trainante del contrabbasso di Adam Hopkins. Il suo sound gonfio, possente, esasperato e armonicamente vario ricorda molto quello di Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, ormai un maestro riconosciuto. Il ruolo della batteria di Nathan Ellman-Bell risulta invece più frastagliato e minuto, modulato sul tintinnare dei piatti o su scabri rumorismi.
Il breve "Chloroform" presenta un'atmosfera scura, un po' funerea, con la tromba che traccia una linea mesta in lontananza. Questo brano sembra funzionare da spartiacque, in quanto i tre brani rimanenti cambiano decisamente registro: si addentrano cioè in situazioni più meditative, in andamenti più lenti e dilatati, anche più imprevedibili, inserendo organici spunti solistici. L'estenuato, decantato intreccio improvvisativo del brano conclusivo si spegne in un formicolante vociare registrato in ambiente esterno.

In definitiva un CD genuino e insolito, che presenta molti spunti d'interesse.
