Meno celebrato di quanto dovrebbe, Romero Lubambo è uno dei grandi chitarristi brasiliani contemporanei e questo suo terzo album per la Sunnyside ce lo ricorda.
Dopo il duo col pianista/compositore Cesar Camargo Mariano (Duo, 2012) e l'esplorazione del grande songbook brasiliano che ha ottenuto 5 stelle in Down Beat (Só: Brazilian Essence, 2013), Lubambo torna a interpretare in solitudine noti standard del jazz e della musica brasiliana accanto a tre temi di sua composizione.

Il percorso è delizioso. "In questo progetto -scrive il chitarrista nelle note di copertina -volevo avvicinarmi maggiormente a quello che sento d'essere in musica. Dai tempi in cui ero adolescente a Rio de Janeiro sono stato influenzato principalmente dalla classica, dalla musica brasiliana e dal jazz. Sono questi i generi che riempivano la mia casa. Non solo grazie ai dischi e alla radio, ma anche dal vivo. Nella mia famiglia infatti si suonavano vari strumenti e si cantava. In queste registrazioni mi porto appresso tutte le influenze della mia infanzia e suono come un brasiliano "sotto l'influenza del jazz.""
Questa frase, che è poi il sottotitolo del disco, è appropriata: la sua tecnica d'impostazione classica, lega varietà ritmica, morbidezza di timbri e fantasia improvvisativa in un tutto organico di grande fascino. I primi nomi che vengono in mente sono quelli di Laurindo Almeida e Baden Powell, a cui Romero Lubambo non ha molto da invidiare.

Di particolarmente coinvolgimento sono la ricchezza introspettiva con cui delinea "Meditação," "Joana Francesa" e "Setembro," ma anche le pregnanti versioni di "Lukinka" e "Muriqui," dove Lubambo ha modo d'evidenziare fantasia ritmica e virtuosismo. Meno interessante "Preciso Aprender A Ser Só," l'unico brano con la chitarra elettrica, che chiude il disco.
