Alexey Kruglov: Seal Of Time
Sax contralto e polistrumentista, Alexey Kruglov è anche poeta e svolge un ruolo di leadership della scena d'avanguardia moscovita. In varie sue esibizioni fonde musica e poesia, declamando versi di poeti russi come Mayakovski o Pushkin.
Dopo il diploma alla Gnesin Russian Music Academy s'è fatto strada nell'ambito del jazz della capitale, facendo esperienza con i membri del Ganelin Trio e nel 2004 s'è recato negli Stati Uniti dove ha svolto attività di perfezionamento (al Brubeck Institute) e collaborazione con Christian McBride, Gary Bartz e Jimmy Heath.
Tornato in Russia ha iniziato a operare con un altro giovane artista di punta, il batterista Oleg Udanov, che troviamo in tutti i brani di questo lavoro.
La registrazione del novembre 2007 vede i due musicisti in studio con il bassista Igor Ivanushkin in due brani, "The Battle" e "Love". Il primo pezzo vede una parte centrale a tempo di marcia sostenere un lungo intervento free del sassofonista, incastonato tra due momenti d'astratta sperimentazione. Il secondo mantiene i connotati informali con un'andamento più meditativo ed è una bella vetrina per il magnetico eloquio di Kruglov.
Gli altri brani sono stati ripresi in un concerto del 4 settembre 2009 in un club di San Pietroburgo e vedono la presenza del pianista Dmitry Bratukhin e della vocalist Erzhena Hide.
Il leader si fa apprezzare per il bel timbro, il fraseggio avventuroso e la capacità di delineare intense melodie senza perdere i connotati free.
