Pubblicato dalla casa editrice tedesca Buddy's Knife, Subway Moon raccoglie alcuni dei più rappresentativi versi del sassofonista statunitense, con l'aggiunta di un testo in prosa dedicato al padre, come lui sassofonista e musicista professionista.
La vita, gli umori, le nevrosi, i problemi della Grande Mela vengono qui ritratti attraverso la personale lente di ingrandimento di un intellettuale colto e raffinato quale è Nathanson. La linea del metrò Q che collega Brooklin a Manhattan è il suo punto privilegiato di osservazione, nonché luogo di scrittura per riflessioni a tutto tondo dove il jazz e la musica sono elementi importanti ma non centrali.
Non mancano i riferimenti alla respirazione circolare, al modo di suonare il sassofono, le dediche a Count Basie, Roland Kirk e Gershwin ma a lasciare il segno sono temi di altra natura: le paure del vivere quotidiano dopo l'attacco terroristico dell'11 settembre; il "cuore messo a nudo" attraverso l'esplorazioni delle sue radici ebraiche e le istanze pacifiste.
