Sonny Rollins: Road Shows, Vol. 3

Come Re Mida, Rollins trasforma tutto quello che tocca in oro, dall'alto della venerabile età di ottantatre anni. A prescindere dai compagni di viaggio, le sei tracce incise dal vivo nel corso dell'ultimo decennio ce lo documentano più gagliardo e inventivo che mai. Una in particolare ("Solo Rollins") può essere elevata a simbolo di una carriera leggendaria nell'approccio tematico all'improvvisazione, dall'alto di una fantasia creatrice inesauribile.

Sono otto minuti di pura goduria, dove il Nostro si diverte a rielaborare con immaginazione feconda la presa melodica di "The Nearness of You" e "Someone to Watch Over Me." Si impone come sempre il proverbiale mattatore solistico, capace di incantare il pubblico con un suono ricco e potente. Ma un po' tutte le tracce ne riassumono le doti di seducente ballauder ed indefesso esploratore di soluzioni ritmiche sempre imprevedibili.

Nella superba rilettura delle due ballad in scaletta, il suo sax tenore ci offre una sequela impressionante di rilucenti finezze, con un crescendo d'eloquio ammaliante.

Che gli dei pagani del jazz ce lo conservino a lungo in vita.
