John Taylor: Requiem for a Dream

Commissionata nel 2007 dall'università di York (UK), questa suite di cinquanta minuti trae spunto dall'opera dello scrittore statunitense Kurt Vonnegut. Alcuni personaggi chiave dei suoi racconti danno infatti il titolo agli episodi di un disco intimo e toccante, ancorché affascinante. Secondo un canone ormai consolidato del pianista inglese, si impongono anche qui limpide architetture, musicali e raffinate, che vengono costruite con eleganza ed attenzione ai contrasti.

È un ben costruito jazz da camera dove ogni nota è al posto giusto e ben studiata, che prevede tessiture trasparente ed ariose. A rinvigorire il tutto ci pensa il sax soprano e tenore di Julian Arguellies con il suo modo allusivo ed obliquo di affrontare i temi con un timbro acre e penetrante. Rispetto alle prevalenti prove in trio, qui è l'arrangiatore a prevalere a discapito del ruolo da solista in modo da far emergere un preciso sound corale, tra intimismo e propulsione ritmica.

Così il sax e il pianoforte si cercano e si inseguono con toni smorzati e fraseggi convergenti, producendo giochi intrecciati di elastiche forze. Requiem for a Dream è un disco in cui brilla anche l'ampio spettro espressivo del leader sia come interprete elegante e asciutto che come dispensatore di fraseggi spigolosi e discordanti.
