C.O.D.E. (Ken Vandermark, Max Nagl, Clayton Thomas, Wolfang Reisinger): Play the music of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy
È quello che succede in Play the music of Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy, splendida registrazione del marzo duemilaotto, debitamente recuperata e documentata dalla Cracked Anegg Records in associazione con Handsemmel Records, entrambe label austriache. Il quartetto C.O.D.E, attraverso i diversi approcci negli arrangiamenti (ognuno dei musicisti si occupa di almeno un brano) e le diverse abilità strumentali, riesce nell'intento di arricchire di nuovi significati le composizioni dei due giganti della musica afro-americana e nel contempo trasformarle in qualcosa di originale, lontano dal concetto, seppur lodevole, di omaggio o di tributo al musicista.
Ai fiati Ken Vandermak e Max Nagl fanno ovviamente la parte del leone, puntando con convinzione verso la scoperta di connessioni timbriche e di incroci strumentali suggeriti dai particolari meno evidenti della scrittura. Il contrabbassista Clayton Thomas, giovane australiano da tener d'occhio, e l'esperto batterista Wolfang Reisinger non si limitano ad un pur convincente ruolo di sostegno ritmico ma con un sottile e creativo interpaly contribuiscono enormemente a definire e completare le coordinate di un quartetto di assoluto valore.
