New Open Circle: Passato Remoto

Si apre con una splendida versione di "Afro Blue" l'album Passato remoto firmato dal New Open Circle, quartetto dove trovano posto in primo piano Carlo Gatti (clarinetto e sax) e Maurizio Signorino (sax), dietro ai quali si posizionano Valerio Della Fonte al contrabbasso e Francesco Di Lenge alla batteria.

Il loro è un percorso musicale di sicuro interesse, per certi aspetti intrigante, a cominciare dall'andamento vagamente reggae della title track, dove si rivela determinante il basso pulsante di Della Fonte (tra l'altro anche in evidenza nei passaggi dove utilizza l'archetto), per proseguire in "Nanna Livia" - uno dei quattro originali firmati da Signorino -, caratterizzata da un'atmosfera struggente e pensosa, poi subito capovolta nell'ipnotico rifacimento di "Caravan". La band regala altri brani introspettivi, come i due presi dal repertorio di Dave Holland: "Conference of the Birds," colorata di un grigio elegante ed intenso; e la più aperta "The Oracle" che sviluppa quasi dieci minuti di jazz fantasioso e di sicuro appeal, e una serie di episodi di valore, come la swingante "Mama Rose Blues".

Alla fine, sono quattro (su cinque) le stelle in pagella, perché la musica dei New Open Circle non sta mai ferma su se stessa e perché non è facile trovare una tracklist dove ognuno degli undici titoli si porta dentro un motivo d'interesse.
