Cecile McLorin Salvant: Oh Snap
Questo Oh Snap incrementa le nuove scelte. Tutti i temi sono personali, in una riflessione che riallaccia il suo legame con la musica a tutto campo. Nasce da quattro anni di ricerca creativa influenzata dalle musiche adolescenziali (Commodores, Backstreet Boys) e afroamericane, spaziando dal pop al folk, dal vaudeville ai generi contemporanei, comprese sonorità house e grunge. È una riflessione intima e appassionata, che presenta spunti anche occasionali, registrati e manipolati sul laptop, fuori dagli studi di registrazione.
Un percorso che rispecchia in pieno la natura eclettica di Cécile, la quale conferma la sua gamma vocale sconfinata, l'esuberanza e l'incantevole varietà cromatica. L'estetica jazz ha una presenza centrale anche per il contributo del fido pianista e tastierista Sullivan Fortner, che l'assiste in piccole formazioni a geometria variabile.
La suggestiva apertura tecnologica di "I Am a Volcano" offre un assaggio della nuova estetica ma "Anything but Now" di chiaro taglio jazzistico, la radiosa folk ballad successiva"Take This Stone" -e l'appassionante (con accordi monkiani) "What Does Blue Mean to You?" confermano il saldo substrato identitario. Per scrivere quest'ultimo brano, Cécile si è ispirata alla novella Beloved di Toni Morrison. Accanto a temi ricchi di effetti vocali sovrapposti, riverberi e ritmi techno (il più efficace è "A Little Bit More") l'amore per il passato ritorna con le suadenti ballad "Expanse" e "Thank You," finendo per trovare nuove sintesi in "Eureka" e "Nun."
