Joe McPhee & Survival Unit II with Clifford Thornton: N.Y.N.Y. 1971
Quando nell'ottobre 1971 al WBAI's Free Music Store di New York fu registrata la performance riportata in questo CD (riedito dopo una prima apparizione in tiratura limitata nel 1996), McPhee stava per compiere trentadue anni. Fin dai primi brani risultano chiari i suoi modelli di riferimento: in "Black Magic Man", un duo col batterista, l'influenza di Ayler appare subito evidente, mentre il disordinato drumming del partner ricorda Sunny Murray. In "Song For Lauren" l'eloquio ayleriano si stempera in una narrazione più distesa e panica forse desunta da Gato Barbieri. Altrove emerge, sbiadito, l'insegnamento di Archie Shepp.
Nella prima metà del disco però il linguaggio di McPhee, pur onesto e disadorno, appare un po' trattenuto, non raggiunge cioè la consistenza e la necessaria essenzialità dei modelli citati, sia sotto il profilo del solismo strumentale, sia per quanto riguarda la strutturazione dei brani e la fusione dell'interplay. Sotto tutti gli aspetti le cose migliorano sensibilmente negli ultimi tre brani, soprattutto nelle forme scultoree di "Message from Denmark". Le intelaiature semplici ma forti avviano lunghe, ben articolate improvvisazioni, in cui hanno modo di emergere le doti dei musicisti: oltre al crepitante fraseggio del leader alla tromba, spiccano le notevoli qualità tecniche ed interpretative del dimenticato Mike Kull, che nei brani precedenti aveva esposto un pianismo vagamente tyneriano e abbastanza anonimo.
