Art Ensemble of Chicago: Non-cognitive Aspects of The City

La creatività e la motivazione dell'AEOC ebbero un periodo di declino dapprima a seguito dell'abbandono da parte di Jarman, nel 1994, e poi della morte di Lester Bowie avvenuta alla fine del 1999. La scomparsa di Malachi Favors, nonostante che nel frattempo fosse rientrato Jarman, sembrava aver decretato la definitiva fine dello storico gruppo.

Al contrario ha del miracoloso come in questi ultimi anni la formazione abbia saputo riprendere vigore, offrendo eccellenti performance concertistiche: ricompattatasi attorno ai superstiti Mitchell, Jarman e Don Moye, ha evidentemente assunto nuova linfa vitale dall'innesto dell'esperto Jaribu Shahid e del giovane Corey Wilkes.

Questo doppio CD ha diversi pregi. Innanzi tutto quello di suonare fin dalle prime note come un'inconfondibile emanazione dell'AEOC, fornendo una bella dimostrazione di identità stilistica. Allo stesso tempo la prevalenza di toni neutri e morbidi lo qualifica come un prodotto di oggi, frutto di una decantata maturità. Viene cioè molto attenuata, rispetto a venti/trenta anni fa, quella discontinuità/contrapposizione fra furibonde impennate free, vitalistiche e percussive, e fasi meditative e concettuali, vicine al silenzio.

Shahid, che ha saputo rimpiazzare Favors con autorevolezza, e Don Moye, capace ancora di sprazzi di vitalità, intrecciano la pulsante, tipica base ritmica. Il trombettista, il cui stile, corrusco ed antilezioso, risulta piuttosto diverso da quello di Bowie (del quale d'altra parte è impensabile replicare l'inimitabile personalità), è comunque in grado di saturare gli spazi con piglio sicuro. Jarman, con la sua sonorità pastosa e rilassata, col suo pacato incedere, introduce una nota di mistica serenità. Ma la voce più lucida, determinante nel dare un'impronta ed una direzione al discorso, rimane quella di Mitchell, autore fra l'altro della maggior parte delle composizioni.

Ogni brano presenta un proprio carattere distintivo. Se la sequenza degli assoli in "Song for My Sister" risulta un po' risaputa, il lungo "On the Mountain", a firma congiunta, è un bell'esempio di dionisiaca improvvisazione collettiva, caratterizzata nel finale dall'intreccio fra i sopranini di Roscoe e Joseph. L'improvvisazione di "Red Sand Green Water", in cui Don Moye rimane molto appartato, prende invece un incedere lento, intriso di pensosa mestizia. In "The J Song", di Jarman, la lunga introduzione è affidata alle diafane percussioni minimali ed alla tromba sordinata in secondo piano, prima che intervenga il tema del flauto; ma anche questa prolissa reiterazione serve a creare un'atmosfera di ipnotica magia "orientale".
