Kenny Wheeler & Colours Jazz Orchestra: Nineteen Plus One
Il repertorio è costituito quasi interamente da standards, scelta abbastanza inconsueta nella discografia del trombettista, tutti arrangiati da lui (che si riserva in ciascuno di essi uno spazio solistico personale), tranne il brano conclusivo, "W.W.," vecchio tema di Wheeler, nel quale lascia il compito dell'assolo al flicorno di Samuele Garofoli.
L'orchestra risponde in modo esemplare alle direttive di Wheeler, interpretando alla perfezione gli arrangiamenti ricchi di swing e di sfumature timbriche, tipici della musica del trombettista, il cui stile è perfettamente riconoscibile nell'espressività delle sue caratteristiche armonizzazioni. Spicca la performance della cantante Diana Torto, che non può non ricordare Norma Winstone (anche in virtù del contesto), ma con un calore tipicamente mediterraneo nell'interpretazione. Tutti i musicisti sono comunque da lodare in blocco, per l'impegno e la compattezza dimostrati sia negli assoli che nelle parti d'insieme, e la completa aderenza alla poetica del leader.
Il disco conferma che anche da temi ormai abusati resta possible estrarre una musica capace di suonare fresca e viva. In questo caso grazie alle doti di Wheeler e della Colours Jazz Orchestra, vera protagonista (e sorpresa) di questa incisione.
