Frank Zappa: Bongo Fury 50th Anniversary Edition

by Mario Calvitti
September 28, 2026

Frank Zappa: Zappa '75 Zagreb / Ljubljana

by Mario Calvitti
October 31, 2022

by Mario Calvitti
September 5, 2022

Ultimate Collectors' Edition

by John Kelman
September 25, 2016

Well, there's certainly been a wait for this one, but for fans of what may be the last high profile progressive rock group to emerge in the 1970s, U.K.'s Ultimate Collectors' Edition proves well worth it. What began as an already sizeable 16-disc box for a group that, during its relatively brief tenure, released just two studio albums and one live recording, has become an 18-disc set with the addition of a recording of the group's final show in Nijmegen, ...

The Complete Arista Albums Collection

by John Kelman
December 14, 2012

When fusion first emerged in the late 1960s/early '70s with artists like trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Chick Corea and guitarist John McLaughlin, the emphasis was on guitar and keyboard heavy lineups like Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra, with an equally strong predilection for the intensity and volume of rock and a kind of thundering funk that was different than the kind of music coming from R&B and soul artists like Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire. Parallel to ...

Bozzio, Holdsworth, Levin, Mastelotto: Amped In Amsterdam

by Phillip Woolever
April 27, 2010

Terry Bozzio, Allan Holdsworth, Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto Paradiso Amsterdam, The Netherlands April 8, 2010

Instrumental mastery was the only rhythmic constant for an experimental exercise that paid off in uncharted realms.

Drummers Terry Bozzio and Pat Mastelotto, along with guitarist Allan Holdsworth and bassist Tony Levin, looked pretty much like any talented jazz quartet despite having drawn some heat during their formative appearances.

Regardless of structure or the purposeful lack ...

Terry Bozzio + Metropole Orkest: Chamber Works

by John Kelman
September 16, 2005

Terry Bozzio is perhaps best known as a chops-laden drummer who's more at home in the pop/rock and fusion worlds. Chamber Works, which teams him with Netherlands' Metropole Orkest--like guitarist Mike Keneally's similar collaboration on last year's The Universe Will Provide--demonstrates that Bozzio is about much, much more. A member of the late Frank Zappa's band from 1976 onwards, Bozzio was required to deal with complex compositions that were at times almost classical in their orchestral complexity: no surprise, given ...
