Imagine recording an album and waiting three years for it to come out. That's what happened to saxophonist George Braith with Extension (Blue Note), after recording it in 1964 The delay surely had something to do with the fact that he had already released two other LPs for the label—Soulstream (1963) and Laughing Soul (1966). Or it could have been that the album sounded remarkably like Larry Young's Into Something and Unity, released around the same period. Who knows? The ...

Backgrounder: George Wallington - Showcase (1954)

George Wallington doesn't get enough credit for being one of bebop's earliest pianists. He played with Dizzy Gillespie and other nascent boppers in clubs on New York's 52nd Street in the mid-1940s. His compositions include Lemon Drop, recorded by Woody Herman, and Godchild, which was included on Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool recordings. He's a fascinating jazz figure. Among his albums, the one I'm spotlighting today is fascinating, both for the personnel and the arranger. Recorded in 1954 for ...

Who Was George Adams?

Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
The reason you may not be familiar with George Adams or his music is that much of it was recorded in Italy. Born in Covington, Ga., in 1940, the tenor saxophonist and flutist did most of his recording as a leader or co-leader in a range of Italian studios. Adams is probably best known for his work with Charles Mingus, including his terrific solos on Changes One and Changes Two, both released in 1975. His finest work was co-leading a ...

As you can see, I'm still hooked on I'll Be Around, one of composer Alec Wilder's best songs. He reportedly wrote the music in 10 minutes while riding in a cab in Baltimore. But the words took much longer," he said in an interview before his death in 1980. Recorded first by Cab Calloway, then by Eugenie Baird with Tony Pastor and after by the Mills Brothers, who made it a huge hit, I'll Be Around was a huge seller ...
