Kiku Trio: Méthane

Kiku è un duo svizzero formato dal trombettista Yannick Barman e dal percussionista Cyril Regamey. Entrambi con solida preparazione accademica alle spalle, entrambi stregati dalla musica improvvisata e tuttora attivi in diverse orchestre sinfoniche e da camera, hanno pensato di coinvolgere in questa registrazione quel geniaccio di pianista brasiliano che risponde al nome di Malcom Braff. E la scelta è risultata la carta vincente di Méthane.

Quando prevalgono le trame sospese delle tromba di Barman, manipolata con un azzeccato uso dell'elettronica, e le sequenze ipnotiche, minimali delle percussioni di Regamey, il rhodes di Braff si inserisce liquido, sfuggente, vicino a certe intuizioni del Sun Ra tastierista ispirato. Il risultato è una musica da camera spaziale, senza forza di gravità, con i suoni che sembrano galleggiare nel vuoto, con distorsioni elettroniche atemporali che, come in un videogioco impazzito, vanno a sbattere contro le strambe linee melodiche create dal pianoforte.

Se a prevalere (ciò accade con meno frequenza) sono i ritmi serrati, Braff evidenzia il suo stile percussivo, incline a deviare da riferimenti più o meno classici, più o meno scontati, battendo i territori di una libera improvvisazione originale e personalizzata. Méthane è una riuscita combinazione di elettrico e di acustico, di manipolazione elettronica e di ricerca della purezza del suono, di ossessioni timbriche e di armoniose tessiture armoniche, di rigorosa scrittura e di imprevedibili devianze sonore. E' musica difficilmente etichettabile per i numerosi riferimenti a generi e stili che si possono cogliere e per l'abilità del trio nel tradurli in un linguaggio fresco e affascinante.
