Ha la forma, lo sviluppo e la sostanza della suite questo Metalix, ultima fatica discografica di Matthias Lupri, ex batterista rock da sempre attratto dalla musica improvvisata e ora astro emergente del vibrafono. Strutturata in sedici brani alcuni dei quali, brevissimi, fungono da raccordo tra atmosfere ed ambientazioni musicali variegate, Metalix esalta le doti compositive, oltre che solistiche, di Lupri.

Architetture aperte, strutture flessibili un uso poco convenzionale del vibrafono arricchito con discrezione e intelligenza da elementi elettronici, un clima di libertà controllata, continue ed intricate variazioni metriche contribuiscono a rendere Metalix un’opera affascinante, forse un po’ troppo ambiziosa , sicuramente accattivante e discretamente seducente.

D’altronde le frequentazioni musicali di Lupri (Cuong Vu, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Osby) non potevano che indirizzare il musicista di origine tedesca verso orizzonti nei quali il piacere della sfida, il gusto della ricerca nella continuità e nel rispetto della tradizione costituiscono il combustibile del proprio credo musicale. Accanto ad atmosfere di chiara impronta boppish convivono così momenti di stampo cameristico, scansioni ritmiche vicine alla fusion si alternano a momenti di libera improvvisazione, con spazio anche per situazioni profondamente meditative.

Rispetto al precedente Transition Sonic, album nel quale si affaccia per la prima volta l’elettronica, Lupri conserva l’affiatata sezione ritmica e cambia la front-line. Jordan Perlson alla batteria sa trasformarsi da muscolare propellente a sofisticato colorista, Thomson Kneeland è solido e incisivo contrabbassista, Nate Radley è chitarrista dai sofisticati toni cool. La novità è rappresentata da due sassofonisti di gran pregio come Myron Walden e Donny McCaslin rispettivamente al contralto e al tenore, bravissimi nel definire il suono del gruppo con intriganti armonizzazioni e sprazzi solistici di valore.
