Jane Ira Bloom: Mental Weather

L’iniziale “A More Beautiful Question“ un duo con pianoforte che ricorda la melodia di “I Love You Porgy“ e la conclusiva “First Toughts/This Nearly Was Mine“ in solitario al sax soprano, sono un vero e proprio trattato sul suono e sul silenzio.

Il controllo dell’emissione, la purezza timbrica, la capacità di trasformare i minimi riverberi in melodiose onde sonore e i silenzi in note sul pentagramma proiettano Jane Ira Bloom ai vertici assoluti dello strumento.

E in mezzo? Una lezione di scrittura, di interplay, e di equilibrio tra composizione e improvvisazione. I brani di Jane Ira Bloom sono dei gioielli formali, basati su una scrittura aperta, costellata da punti di raccordo che consentono ai musicisti di far il punto della situazione, partire per nuove avventure, fornire nuovi stimoli ai compagni d’avventura.

E la scelta di questi è davvero perfetta. Mark Helias è un monumento del contrabbasso che ha attraversato tutte le musiche possibili, Matt Wilson è estroso è inventivo quanto basta per vivacizzare la musica della sassofonista, lo sconosciuto pianista Dawn Clement sciorina idee armoniche piuttosto interessanti e risulta assai funzionale all’incedere del discorso musicale.

Mental Weather è una chiara esemplificazione di come si possa produrre un jazz fresco, solido, consistente, originale, di altissimo livello rispettando il linguaggio codificato del jazz della via maestra e attualizzandolo con ricchezza di idee e creativa progettualità.
