E non è un caso che queste tracce ci raccontino molto di più delle delusioni e speranze amorose, delle seduzioni racchiuse in molti testi: ci raccontano di una musica nera che progressivamente vede la sua spinta sociale e di protesta sciogliersi in un lago dorato di archi e che affida sempre più alla voce dell'interprete il compito di fare da medium verso un mondo globalizzato. Grooves morbidi e ammiccanti, cori di stelle cadenti estive, gommose sensualità e brividi freddi, c'è tutto un mondo intorno e non solo.
E allora fiducia piena a Dean Rudland, libero di ficcare naso e orecchie nei cataloghi di etichette come Curtom, Hi, Philadelphia International e altre: doppio CD da glicemia e ormoni alla stelle, ma anche tanta sostanza musicale, a partire da immancabili come Al Green, Patty Labelle, The O'Jays, The Chi-Lites o Ann Peebles.
L'inizio, con Leroy Hutson [ex Impressions] dice tutto: la sua voce confidenziale in "All Because of You," si srotola senza fretta sugli archi, quasi a costruire una complicità rilassata con l'ascoltatore. E ancora il moderato groove di Lou Courtney, un Teddy Pendergrass a botta sicura, le tastiere philly di Dexter Wansel, gli Earth, Wind & Fire e via dicendo.
Semi lanciati dentro il pop, più o meno radiofonico, di ogni latitudine e per questo così familiari, mentre scivolano lentamente nella plasticosità degli anni Ottanta e si smarriscono nell'entropia sonora che ci circonda. Li riconoscete dal luccichio, comunque!
