About the Album

"Africa," written by John Coltrane, was originally recorded and released in 1961. As the opening track on my new release, "The Last Trane to Africa," I decided to give the piece a more African-infused sound, with the inclusion of the African talking drum and the djembes. I also added maracas llaneras (from Venezuela) and cymbals to complete the percussion section. Brilliant solos are played by Richard Howell on tenor saxophone, Frank Martin on piano and Sheldon Brown on soprano saxophone. Fred Randolph plays a stellar bass groove throughout.
