Mark Lomax, Rosetta Trio & Federica Michisanti

February is Black History Month and this episode features some music recognizing that fact. Drummer and musicologist Dr. Mark Lomax, II 's 400: An Afrikan Epic is a monumental 12-album cycle honoring the 400th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. He used the music he grew up with—spirituals and blues—as source material, and despite criticism and resistance from his music professors at Ohio State, he persevered. Music from Lomax's project will be featured throughout this month.

There's also more music reflecting Black History Month from the new: Chicago culture-maker Angel Bat Dawid and, from the past, a tribute to saxophonist Joseph Jarman who passed away in January. New releases debuting this week come from Stephan Crump's Rosetta Trio, Human Feel, Italian bassist Federica Michisanti, Gebhard Ullman, Chris Potter, Dutch saxophonist Wietse Voermans and the trio of Jamie Saft, Steve Swallow and Bobby Previte. Enjoy!
