Quinsin Nachoff: Magic Numbers

Quinsin Nachoff è un giovane sassofonista canadese, che - oltre ad aver collaborato con il suo illustre compatriota Kenny Wheeler - ha sviluppato un certo interesse per la musica europea. Quella di John Taylor ed Ernst Reijseger, ad esempio, con i quali pubblicherà il suo prossimo album, ma anche quella più accademica, con il calore e la melodicità di Ravel e Debussy, e la forza dirompente del primo novecento (Stravinski, Bartok, Schoenberg, Shostakovich).

La musica che ci propone in questo album è dunque un mix di tutte queste influenze. Una musica che ama la bella melodia ma anche le dissonanze dai sapori forti, mentre il sostegno ritmico, sempre molto deciso, è garantito da due autentici fuoriclasse come Mark Helias e Jim Black.

Molto interessante anche l'uso del quartetto d'archi, asciutto ed assai poco indulgente. Poco in linea con la tradizione del jazz (ammesso che ce ne sia una per gli archi!) ed invece molto aderente alla lezione di Shostakovich.

Un album di difficile catalogazione, che colpisce per la sua forza e complessità.
