Moutin Factory Quintet: Lucky People

I gemelli François e Louis Moutin dividono il tempo e le loro attività musicali tra la Francia e New York, dove François risiede. Dopo aver guidato per anni il The Moutin Reunion Quartet con Rick Margitza e Pierre de Bethmann, nel 2013 hanno assemblato il Moutin Factory Quintet insieme al sassofonista Christophe Monniot, al chitarrista Manu Codjia e al pianista Thomas Enhco: Lucky People è il primo disco di questa nuova formazione.
Con i piedi ben piantati nel mainstream, e pur senza l'ambizione di innovare, il lavoro riesce ad essere contemporaneo: nel senso che assorbe e fa proprie le influenze di un certo modo di fare jazz negli ultimi quindici-vent'anni; dalle parti della Nonesuch, per capirsi. Quando il tempo tende al medium-up, ad esempio, è impossibile non sentire nel pianoforte di Enhco la lezione di Mehldau: note ribattute con la destra e contrappunto con la sinistra, sfasamenti ritmici etc.

Lucky People è uno di quegli album che mettono allo scoperto le strutture, le architetture, gli schemi, che non fanno nulla per nasconderli. Ci sono schemi compositivi: in certi brani ("Dragonfly," "A Busy Day") si passa da un ritmo binario ad uno ternario, come nei pezzi latin-bop alla Gillespie, ma con sezioni molto più estese; in altri ("Soul") si gioca sui contrasti, un solo di sopranino bluesy e pieno di note dopo quello di pianoforte, contrappuntistico e pieno di pause.
Ci sono schemi nell'interplay: Ehnco e i due Moutin hanno una visione tutto sommato tradizionale della ritmica, con spazi e ruoli precisi, mentre Codjia e Monniot portano nel gruppo istanze più eccentriche. La chitarra, semidistorta scuola-Rosenwinkel, appare e scompare nell'accompagnamento, intorbida il suono altrimenti iperlevigato del trio piano-basso-batteria, oppure tace per minuti.

Ma soprattutto Monniot -e soprattutto al sopranino- carica la musica di connotazioni black che senza di lui non avrebbe: intonazione crescente alla bisogna, bluenotes in quantità, il suo sax stride —ma stride con profitto- rispetto al resto della band, anche se in qualche brano si normalizza ("Forgivenes"). In altri per fortuna no: la gragnuola di note fuori tonalità e le lampanti citazioni coltraniane sul finale di una ballad che più pop non si potrebbe ("Soul").
Ci sono anche momentanei sconfinamenti in territori insospettabili, che intervengono a spezzare lo schematismo: polifonie improvvisate in "Lucky People" e in "You'll Be Fine," un medley dedicato a Ornette e suonato, con felice intuizione e gran tecnica, solo dai due Moutin.
