Phil Wilson - Makoto Ozone: Live!!

Ha fatto bene la Capri Records ad andare a ripescare questo simpaticissimo disco del duo di Phil Wilson al trombone e Makoto Ozone al pianoforte. Siamo nel 1982 ad una esibizione live al Berklee Performance Center: Phil Wilson è insegnante al famoso istituto e Makoto Ozone un promettente pianista giapponese che subito dopo entrerà nel quartetto di Gary Burton dando inizio ad una carriera con case discografiche importanti e con colleghi famosi.

L'ascolto rivela una serata con due musicisti in grande spolvero. Phil Wilson ha una bella voce pastosa, ricca di feeling, che deriva direttamente da maestri come Vic Dickenson. Ha lavorato a lungo nelle big band ed anche in duo sa farsi valere. Al suo fianco, il giovane giapponese che accompagna con passione e senza incertezze nonostante la giovane età, sembra un navigato esecutore di standards.

Sono trentanove minuti compatti, in cui non c'è niente di sprecato. Stupendo il blues di "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave to Me," che ci riporta in un'atmosfera retro che sembra autentica. Il finale "Giant Steps" di John Coltrane è eseguito con tanta leggerezza che sembra un brano semplice e facile.

Un'incisione che meritava di essere pubblicata ed un'occasione per ascoltare Phil Wilson in una formazione per lui insolita.
