Queste risposte non dimostrano solo un senso dell'understatement, e dell'umorismo, tipicamente nordico. Sono, in realtà, rivelatrici anche del carattere profondo della musica di Aarset, tanto affascinante quanto sfuggente.
Impossibile infatti utilizzare, per Aarset in generale e per questo album in particolare, i parametri tradizionali che si applicano al jazz, anche inteso nel senso più lato. Le composizioni hanno struttura semplice, armonicamente prossima al rock. Non ci sono assoli di grande rilievo. I crescendo sono sempre orchestrali, quasi mai attribuibili al singolo intervento solista. I suoni sono molto carichi di elettricità.
E tuttavia Aarset, al pubblico jazz, piace. Piace perché è, innanzitutto, un grande organizzatore di suoni. E piace perché nei suoi brani si avverte, sempre, una grande tensione espressiva.
A volte, soprattutto dal vivo, si lascia un po' prendere la mano e tende ad esagerare. Succede anche in questo Live Extracts. Ma se avete voglia di atmosfere oniriche e visionarie, è un album perfetto.
