Marshall Allen - Lou Grassi: Live at The Guelph Festival
In questa incisione del settembre 2001, Allen si esibisce con il batterista Lou Grassi, musicista assai meno noto, ma importante figura di raccordo tra free, bop e avanguardia con notevoli studi e produzioni nel campo del Dixieland.
Il risultato è un disco onesto e sincero, senza momenti magici né esecuzioni memorabili, ma con i due protagonisti impegnati in un dialogo franco e riflessivo, senza sotterfugi o comodi ammiccamenti. Come due vecchi amici che tirano le somme delle proprie esperienze musicali, Allen e Grassi privilegiano l’essenzialità e la pacatezza rispetto all’esuberanza e alla verbosità. Il sax del primo è scarno, leggermente lamentoso, ricco di comunicativa e carico di significati. La batteria del secondo colora, suggerisce, crea silenzi che si armonizzano perfettamente con le linee zigzaganti di Allen, dando vita ad un piccolo distillato di saggezza improvvisativa.
