In It's About Time del batterista Jacob Melchior ascoltiamo brani originali alternati, o ibridati, con diversi evergreen del classico repertorio jazzistico.

Da dietro i tamburi Melchior dirige il Trio de SUM - che si compone anche del pianista Tadataka Unno e del bassista Hassan JJ Shakur - facendo leva su qualità ritmiche d'assoluta levatura e si diletta nel creare percorsi d'arrangiamento fantasiosi e di sicuro fascino espressivo; come nell'iniziale "Dancing Foo" unita a "Squatty Roo" di Johnny Hodges, per poi cambiare versante con un tuffo nella musica di Jobim ("Brigas nunca mais") e nella ballad d'altri tempi come "For All We Know," levigata dalla calda voce dell'ospite Frank Senior.

La musica contenuta in It's About Time si sviluppa in maniera compatta, anche se a emergere sono le doti dei singoli, come il timbro prezioso di Tadataka Unno e la scioltezza di un contrabbassista flessibile come Hassan JJ Shakur; valori fondamentali di una seduta di registrazione ispirata, dove alle poche cose pianificate si sono aggiunti molti spunti di formidabile immediatezza.
