Patti Wicks: It's a Good Day

Ad un ascolto superficiale si rischia di classificare Patti Wicks tra le cantanti che il mercato discografico ha accolto nel tentativo di cercare un'altra Diana Krall. Abbiamo la stessa formula con una cantante e pianista ottima e una solida sezione ritmica, ma ci sono differenze importanti: la Wicks non canta testi di autori moderni, le sue interpretazioni degli standards sono di livello sopraffino. Basta già la "Everything Happens to Me" d'apertura a rendere la qualità artistica di questa cantante e del suo trio, completato da Giovanni Sanguineti e Giovanni Gullino. La sua interpretazione è così vera, così appassionata da fare quasi pensare che sia stata scritta da lei e che le vicissitudini del personaggio siano le proprie.

È già durante questa canzone che si resta così coinvolti che non si riesce piú a metter via questo disco. Pieno di standard sentiti tante volte, interpretati da qualche altra voce. Eppure, qui c'è quel qualcosa in più, il contenuto che li rende ancora degni di attenzione, nonostante sia stato eseguito tutto il possibile sui loro accordi. Le improvvisazioni della Wicks sono segnate da chiarezza espositiva ed essenzialità del pensiero musicale.

E l'atmosfera colloquiale, la familiarità con cui vengono eseguiti è un altro punto di forza, facili da ascoltare, eppure difficili da eseguire così, con quella forza espressiva che rende ogni canzone una storia con alle spalle qualcosa, un vissuto, una realtà che rende credibile il cantante mentre la racconta al pubblico.
