Big Crazy Energy New York Band: Inspirations Vol. 1

Quando il trombonista Jens Wendelboe ha scelto il nome per la sua big band non ha certo usato l'arte dell'understatement ma non ci ha portato neppure fuori strada, visto che ascoltando il primo album di questo largo ensemble la prima cosa che viene a galla è proprio la grande energia che caratterizza il suono e gli arrangiamenti di questa orchestra newyorchese.

L'iniziale "Pleasant Pheasant," scritta in origine dal batterista Billy Cobham, fornisce il perfetto kick-off al disco e i brani successivi mantengono il passo, anche se ovviamente ci sono dei cambi di ritmo, visto che il repertorio comprende alcune interessanti ballad dove brilla la voce della vocalist Deb Lyons.

I musicisti sono navigati e solidi, a partire dal ben noto Mike Migliore, saxofonista di razza che già si era distinto nella band di Maynard Ferguson. Le cose migliori sono lasciate per il gran finale con una rilettura impressionistica dalla bella "Gloris's Step" di Scott La Faro che ci conduce alla emozionate "A Day in the Life" di beatlesiana memoria. Un brano che già in origine prevedeva l'uso dell'orchestra per dilatare le coscienze. In quella memorabile occasione bastò una sola lunghissima nota per aprire un mondo che ancora oggi merita di essere esplorato.
