Jason Stein: In Exchange for a Process
Ma il giovane Jason Stein (classe '76) sa già il fatto suo, forte dell'esperienza nell'ambito della nuova scena jazz di Chicago (ha fatto parte dell'ensamble post-free Bridge 61) approccia questo lavoro in solitario con la grinta e la fantasia necessarie per reggere tutta la durata di "In Exchange for a Process".
Il nostro predilige gli angoli appuntiti alle smussature melodiche, le deviazioni improvvise alle curve arrotondate delle assonanze, cosicché ne viene fuori un album ostico, pieno zeppo di situazioni contorte, evidenti già dall'iniziale "For the Sake of Edgar Polard". Per arrivare alla conclusiva "Fiction of C.G" ci vuole una bella dose di determinazione, utile anche per passare indenni le sabbie mobili di "Paint by Number" e una nutrita serie di alternanze tra suono e silenzio che caratterizzano il resto dei brani.
Stein dimostra certamente di avere del coraggio, a chi lo ascolta il compito di capire se la sua musica è semplice autocompiacimento o un qualcosa capace di andare concretamente oltre le consuetudini.
