Richard Galliano Quartet featuring Gary Burton: If You Love Me (L’Hymne a L’Amour)

Per qualche misteriosa ragione (la fisarmonica? i tanghi? la cantabilità?), Richard Galliano è uno di quei musicisti che divide il pubblico: o lo si ama, o lo si odia, senza mezze misure. Personalmente, e a differenza di molti miei colleghi di penna, ho sempre amato molto Richard Galliano. Il suo virtuosismo che non perde mai di vista la melodia, il senso della musica. Quella sua capacità di farci immaginare una Francia un po' retró, fatta di fumosi café parigini e trattorie di provincia con le tovaglie a quadretti.

Non sono dunque tra quelli che stroncano ogni suo lavoro “a prescindere”, come direbbe Totò. E però mi sembra che con questo suo ultimo album il nostro abbia compiuto un mezzo passo falso. I musicisti sono eccellenti, gli orizzonti affrontati sono quelli di sempre (Piazzolla, la canzone d'autore francese, un brano originale), i brani deliziosamente orecchiabili, ma nel complesso l'album risulta uniforme, troppo incentrato sui mezzi tempi, privo di guizzi creativi od espressivi. In una parola, fiacco.

Negli intenti di Galliano, questo album è un inno all'amore. Sentimento difficile da trattare. Il confine tra romanticismo e stucchevole mielosità è labile, molto sottile. E, ahinoi, la musica di questo album si trova spesso sul lato sbagliato.
