Sabir Mateen - Silvia Bolognesi: Holidays in Siena

L'incontro tra contrabbasso e sax di potrebbe definire un topos che si è celebrato in modo più o meno ricorrente nella storia del jazz moderno. Un tipo di formazione con molti limiti forse, ma che Braxton, Shepp, Holland e altri hanno affrontato alla ricerca di una gamma immensa di geometrie possibili.

In questo caso è tra dolci sinuosità e inevitabili contrasti che si snoda questo riuscitissimo abbraccio, immortalato al Teatro dei Varii di Colle Val D'Elsa, nel dicembre del 2010. L'improvvisazione stavolta non conduce quasi mai verso recessi radicali e estremismi sonori, ma dagli scarni canovacci tematici si dipartono dialoghi ricchissimi, in continua alternanza tra destrutturazioni ritmiche e reiterazioni su cui si avviluppano tempo e armonia sempre in bilico tra dimensione informale e bozzetti cromatici di ineffabile bellezza.

Non è del tutto paradossale che il gioco si faccia più duro quando ai sassofoni subentrano i clarinetti e i flauti, ma complessivamente l'ascolto si snoda lasciando un'impressione non di rabbia ma di saggia e sorniona profondità, che si staglia su pennellate poetiche e a tratti affabulatrici. Succede anche grazie ai suoni di questo disco: il contrabbasso legnoso della Bolognesi e la voce sassofonistica di Mateen che è possente, in grado di evocare il Rollins di East Broadway Run Down e a proprio agio nei più diversi registri.

E a proposito di Rollins: si ascolti la solitaria ma imponente cadenza di "Memory" o l'intimismo urbano di "Sunset In Legoli" per capire con l'orecchio a cosa ci riferiamo.
