Varyan Weston - Ingrid Laubrock - Hannah Marshall: Haste
Per quanto si tratti di un trio paritario si può percepire una certa gerarchia al suo interno. Varyan Weston, il più esperto e autorevole dei tre, amministra il suo pianismo con grande varietà di accenti, con concentrazione e solida consequenzialità negli sviluppi, risultando il maggior responsabile nell'indirizzare l'interplay e il discorso complessivo. La sassofonista Ingrid Laubrock è indubbiamente una gregaria di lusso: intraprendente e inventiva, anche se non particolarmente originale nella pronuncia strumentale. La violoncellista Hannah Marshall appare un po' più defilata, pur inserendosi negli interstizi con tempismo e aggiungendo un colore acidulo ed evanescente.
Tutti e tre i musicisti espongono un approccio che non nasconde a volte inflessioni di derivazione accademica, che vengono però decisamente inglobate e trasformate da modalità e intenti sperimentali, da quella istantanea ricerca di una particolare consistenza sonora e quella conformazione della narrazione musicale che sono proprie della musica improvvisata.
I tre brani, di lunghezze diverse (dai quasi 6 minuti di "Courtesy of None" agli oltre 23 di "Leaning Up") ma in realtà sezioni di un unico svolgimento improvvisativo, presentano l'alternanza fra situazioni diverse, fra accensioni graduali e decantazioni, basandosi prevalentemente su un'esigenza di astrazione, ora algida e austera, ora più concitata e screziata.
