Sound in Action Trio: Gate
Come allora alle composizioni originali di Vandermark [coerentemente dedicate a una serie di maestri della batteria] si alternano alcuni brani tratti dalla "storia" del jazz più avventuroso: troviamo infatti qui una chiaroscurale "The Prophet", in cui il leader sceglie significativamente il clarinetto basso laddove Eric Dolphy era al sax contralto, il Sun Ra fine anni Cinquanta di "Enlightenment" e l'Ed Blackwell di "Togo", splendido "standard" del repertorio Old And New Dreams, per chiudere poi con un fenomenale tris composto dalla coltraniana "One Up, One Down", dal "Love Cry" di Ayler e dalla sempre sorprendente "House Party Starting" di Herbie Nichols [la cui ironia trova ancora nel clarinetto basso un formidabile alleato].
Il disco è un vero e proprio manuale di strategia improvvisativa e di organizzazione dei flussi ritmici: non si pensi però che i termini "strategia" e "organizzazione" siano in alcun modo indice di eccessivo controllo, la musica è in realtà carnale e fluisce con straordinaria naturalezza, addensandosi in gorghi di groove per poi stendersi sui piani inclinati che le differenti concezioni ritmiche dei due batteristi vengono a creare.
Se non è un mistero che Ken Vandermark abbia sempre avuto un rapporto privilegiato con i batteristi [interessante è anche confrontare questo trio con il duo che il sassofonista americano forma insieme al batterista norvegese Paal Nilssen-Love], la musica di Gate è uno splendido esempio di come si possano asciugare gli elementi sonori senza perdere in ricchezza ["Medium Cool (for Paul Lovens)" è esemplare in questo senso]. Una vera tavola degli elementi di cinquant'anni di jazz!
