Paul Brody's Sadawi: For the Moment
Dave Douglas è ormai sulla breccia da parecchi anni, ed è dunque naturale, fisiologico, che comincino ad emergere trombettisti “douglasiani”. E' questo il caso di Paul Brody, musicista che si rifà esplicitamente a Dave Douglas (il quale a sua volta ha ha una diretta discendenza da Booker Little), soprattutto per quanto riguarda la voce strumentale.
Naturalmente, poiché Brody (benchè tedesco) si muove con disinvoltura sulla scena newyorkese ed incide per la Tzadik, affinità con il trombettista di Montclair si riscontrano anche a livello compositivo (ad esempio nell'uso delle scansioni ternarie e negli arrangiamenti), ma qui la sua linea estetica si rifà più direttamente alla tradizione ebraica (il klezmer) ed alle sue melodie struggenti. La scrittura di Brody è, da questo punto di vista, molto felice e capace di passare con disinvoltura da atmosfere delicatissime a frammenti quasi-rock.
Un album dunque non particolarmente originale (a tratti l'ombra di Dave Douglas è davvero ingombrante), ma che si lascia comunque ascoltare con estremo piacere.
