Ensemble Novo: E Preciso Perdoar
ByEnsemble Novo has been serenading fortunate Philadelphians with choro, samba, and bossa nova since 2013. "E Preciso Perdoar" ("You Must Forgive") from Carinhoso (Frosty Cordial Records, 2021) showcases their gentle, swinging way with the bossa nova. Written by Carlos Coqueijo and Alcivando Luz then made famous by Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz, it is a gorgeous song. The many renditions include a touching tribute by João's daughter Bebel Gilberto (Pias, 2023).
There are, however, no vocalists in Ensemble Novo. But the alternate combination of saxophone, vibraphone, and guitar is a lovely set of voices that warms the heart. Tom Moon soulfully anchors the melody on sax then hands off to Behn Gillece on vibraphone, followed by Ryan McNeely on guitar, for extended, supple interpretations. Moon returns to reprise the song and the group drifts off all too soon.
So grab your beverage of choice, kick back, and chill. Visualize a sandy beach, the sounds of gentle waves, and the caress of a warm ocean breeze. Hit play and let Ensemble Novo add a moment of beauty to your day.
