Empire è stato stampato solamente in formato long playing e in tiratura limitata di quattrocento copie. Una scelta coraggiosa, di nicchia, effettuata, pensiamo, con il pudore e la consapevolezza che quella proposta in Empire non è musica popolare, di facile accesso, accattivante, modaiola, una strizzatina d'occhio al grande pubblico ed una al critico militante. Niente affatto, quella proposta da Red Trio e dall'ospite inglese John Butcher è musica dura, ruvida, (o)scura, notturna, radicale, "brutta, sporca e cattiva" parafrasando un celebre film di Ettore Scola. Ma alla sua maniera poetica e tremendamente avventurosa.

I quattro si incontrano e si scontrano sul terreno, naturalmente, della libera improvvisazione. Tutto è lecito, tutto è concesso. Colpi dritti allo stomaco, quelli che ti fanno annaspare in cerca di una vitale boccata d'ossigeno. Ma anche momenti di sospensione e immobilità, il soffio della musica appena percettibile. A volte si procede a ondate, maree montanti che rischiano di affogarti e che rientrano giusto un attimo prima, liberando adrenalina pura. Altre volte attraverso scosse improvvise, terremoti tanto brevi quanto devastanti, musicalmente parlando, nei quali i musicisti si abbandonano ad una sorta di trance primordiale.

L'ospite inglese si erge, involontariamente pensiamo, a principale protagonista della registrazione. Il suo controllo su sax tenore e sax soprano sono straordinari: vi estrae suoni impossibili, dalle onomatopee ai richiami della natura fino ad arrivare a sonorità che paiono provenire da una fonte elettronica: bip, sfrigolii di valvole, distorsioni, impulsi, onde magnetiche. Il Red Trio reagisce alla grande alla quantità di stimoli forniti da Butcher attraverso una fitta trama di relazioni, intrecci timbrici e armonici nei quali a turno gli strumenti assumono ruoli differenti da quelli canonici alimentando un maelstrom sonoro di rara potenza e suggestione.
