C'è un grandissimo senso dello swing, un unione d'intenti rara e un'intensità espressiva di sicuro spessore in Elaine's Song, il nuovo lavoro di Chris Colangelo, contrabbassita e compositore di base a Los Angeles.

Per dar vita a una scaletta perlopiù strutturata attorno a degli originali, il leader si contorna di musicisti in grado di garantire un'ampia aperura di compasso timbrico - sono tre i fiatisti in squadra (Bob Sheppard, Benn Clatworthy e Zane Musa) pronti ad alternarsi o ad esprimersi all'unisono -, e di una ritmica che non perde un colpo, sia sotto il profilo del timing, ma soprattutto sotto quello dell'espressività. Ne è esempio la linea melodica disegnata dal pianista John Beasley in "Green and Blue," flessuosa e carica di passione, o il solo ipnotico del drummer Steve Hass in "Like Kenny," traccia dedicata a Kenny Garrett, uno dei punti d'ispirazione di Colangelo.

Tra le cose da ricordare di questa seduta di registrazione mettiamo in prima fila una tiratissima "Straight Street," la nervosa "Gryffindor's Revenge," attraversata da un sano senso di improvvisazione, alcuni interventi di Benn Clatworthy al flauto e la scurissima introduzione di Colangelo in "Falling Grace". File under: perle di jazz.
