Tia Fuller: Decisive Steps
Un album che mette in evidenza le doti tecniche e le qualità espressive della Fuller, capace di firmare dei brani dall'arrangiamento molto ricco, dove i mille colori del suo sax emergono in primo piano, intrecciandosi con la tromba di Sean Jones, il vibrafono di Warren Wolf, e le molte linee melodiche prodotte da una band - tutta femminile - coesa e ben rodata.
Brani ricchi dicevamo, giocati su tempi veloci e riempiti dai lunghi chorus della leader, dove a mancare, spesso, è il respiro, lo spazio di manovra, quel bianco necessario per far risaltare il resto dell'arcobaleno. Come il basso di Christian Mc Bride, ospite in tre brani - tra i quali "Shades of McBride," versione fulleriana di "Shade of the Cedar Tree" -, il quale si ritaglia a fatica qualche spiraglio; o come il pianismo ispirato di Shamie Royston, imbrigliato in una maglia sonora troppo fitta.
Oltre ai brani autogrfi, completano il programma lo splendido standard "I Can't Get Started" - eseguito con una massiccia dose di eleganza -, e la conclusiva "My Shining Hour": due passi importanti verso una futura concezione jazzistica più equilibrata e meglio messa a fuoco.
