Le otto composizioni/improvvisazioni contenute in questo Cyrillic trasportano facilmente l'ascoltatore dentro questo mondo: il vocabolario è quello consueto della scena chicagoana, un lessico che nasce dalla grande stagione della New Thing e che attraverso la stagione creativa post-free viene poi riletto con grande onestà in una prospettiva di maggiore sintesi.
La lezione di Ken Vandermark è qui piuttosto presente e non a caso Rempis è, nei Vandermark 5, l'alter ego del sassofonista, colui che trova in una furiosa e lirica complementarità con il leader la chiave per un jazz ricco di significato. Qui la dimensione del duo, da sempre la più delicata per equilibri e emotività, è sfruttata da entrambi i musicisti con grande sensibilità, tra squarci melodici e accelerazioni roventi.
Nulla di nuovo, direte voi, ma la concisione e l'efficacia che emerge da temi come "Thief Of Sleep," contrapposta all'articolazione di brani come "How to Cross When Bridges Are Out" raccontano come si possa fare jazz oggi con onestà, senza bisogno di troppi proclami.
